Prep Is the Paint Job

Every paint failure we get called to fix traces back to prep. Peeling exterior paint is almost always paint applied over a chalky, dirty, or damp surface. Interior paint that scuffs off along a hallway was rolled over a glossy old finish nobody scuff-sanded. Bubbling around a window is caulk that was never removed and replaced. The product on the can is rarely the problem.

Our exterior process is wash, scrape, sand, spot-prime bare substrate, replace failed caulk joints, and then two finish coats. Interiors get holes and cracks filled and sanded, glossy surfaces de-glossed, stains sealed with a stain-blocking primer, and trim caulked at the wall line before finish coats. It is unglamorous, it is most of the labor hours, and it is the entire difference between a paint job that lasts five years and one that lasts fifteen.
